About the Role
Join St. John's Bay Electric Company (SJBEC) as our Lead Electrical Engineer. SJBEC is the only utility in Próspera, Roatán, providing electricity and water to homes and businesses inside the Próspera ZEDE. We are in turnaround mode: improving operations, reducing losses, and getting ready for on-site solar within the next year. You will be the senior technical leader in the company, working directly with the General Manager.
This is a hands-on role. You will spend real time in the field, on the meters, and on the lines.
Key Responsibilities
Loss Analysis & Prevention
Investigate and reduce electrical losses between our master meters and customer meters
Find sources of non-technical loss (theft, meter errors, unbilled connections) and fix them
Track losses every month and report on progress
System Mapping & Assets
Keep an accurate map of the electrical system across Pristine Bay and Beta
Build and maintain the meter registry and asset inventory
Document the network in CAD, KMZ, or GIS
Capacity & Consumption
Monitor load on transformers, feeders, and master meters; flag problems early
Plan capacity for new developments coming to Próspera
Set standards for new connections and review proposed loads
Field Team Leadership
Manage and develop a 3 to 5 person field team (maintenance, meter reading, on-site work)
Set technical standards, safety rules, and SOPs
Lead complex repairs and act as the senior technical contact
Solar & Future Generation
Lead the engineering for our upcoming on-site solar project (interconnection, protection, metering, net-metering policy)
Take ownership of solar assets as they come online
Help shape the capex plan and long-term grid strategy
General Technical Guidance
Serve as the senior technical advisor to the General Manager
Bring engineering reality to pricing, capex, and policy decisions
Represent SJBEC in technical conversations with Próspera, developers, and partners
Required Qualifications
Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
5+ years of experience in power distribution, utility operations, or industrial electrical systems
Hands-on experience with medium- and low-voltage systems, metering, and protection
Proven ability to lead a field team
Fluent in English and Spanish, both written and spoken. This is required.
Willing and able to move to Roatán, Honduras full-time
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with utility loss analysis, AMR/AMI, or smart metering
Experience with solar PV, interconnection, and net metering
GIS, CAD, or KMZ skills
Background in a small or resource-limited utility
Experience working in Latin America or the Caribbean
Familiar with IEEE and IEC standards
